Five more VFL players join AFL lists

After exciting goalkickers Bayley Fritsch (Casey Demons) and Sam Switkowski (Box Hill Hawks) were taken by Melbourne and Fremantle respectively in the AFL Draft, 25-year-old Northern Blues best-and-fairest and former Port Adelaide AFL defender Cam O’Shea was the only player taken in the Pre-Season Draft, by Carlton.

In the Rookie Draft, 21-year-old Footscray utility and ex-Carlton rookie Billy Gowers was the VFL’s first selection at pick no.9 by the Western Bulldogs, before 24-year-old Port Melbourne premiership backman Brody Mihocek was taken by Collingwood with pick no.22 and 26-year-old veteran Box Hill captain David Mirra joined Hawthorn with pick no.23.

In addition, 19-year-old Richmond VFL indigenous prospect Derek Smith was pre-selected by the AFL Tigers via the Next Generation Academy rules.
