J.J. Liston Trophy preview

The 2018 VFL Best & Fairest night takes place this Monday, with the J.J. Liston Trophy for the Peter Jackson VFL’s best and fairest player to be presented.

We preview the count by looking at one of the top chances to claim this year’s honour from each VFL club.

ANDREW MOORE (Box Hill Hawks): 27-year-old club captain and 189cm inside midfielder in his second season with the Hawks out of the AFL. Recorded team-highs in total disposals (averaging 26 per game), contested possessions (13) and clearances (six) as well as kicking eight goals across 13 matches.

 

COREY WAGNER (Casey Demons): 21-year-old 181cm midfielder/forward in his first season with the Demons out of the AFL. Ranked third in the VFL for total tackles (averaging eight per game) and recorded team-highs in total disposals (21), contested possessions (eight), inside-50s (four) and clearances (3.5) across 18 matches.

 

MARCUS LENTINI (Coburg): 19-year-old 184cm inside midfielder in his first season with the Lions. Ranked first in the VFL for total disposals (averaging 28 per game), handballs (15) and contested possessions (14) and third for total clearances (seven) as well as kicking nine goals across 18 matches.

 

MARTY HORE (Collingwood): 22-year-old 189cm rebounding defender and 2017 club best and fairest in his third season with the Magpies. Ranked first in the VFL for total rebound-50s (averaging six per game) and second for total marks (eight) as well as recording a team-high in total disposals (21) across 17 matches.

 

NICK HIND (Essendon): 24-year-old 180cm midfielder/defender in his third season with the Bombers. Recorded team-highs in total inside-50s (averaging five per game) and score assists (1.5) as well as ranking second at Essendon for total disposals (23) and third for clearances (3.5) across 17 matches.

 

WILL HAYES (Footscray): 23-year-old 181cm inside midfielder in his fifth season with the Bulldogs. Ranked second in the VFL for total uncontested possessions (averaging 16 per game) and third for total inside-50s (five) as well as recording team-highs in total disposals (26), contested possessions (10) and clearances (4.5) across 18 matches.

 

COREY RICH (Frankston): 21-year-old 183cm forward in his first season with the Dolphins after crossing from Sandringham. Ranked fourth in the VFL for total goals (34) – including hauls of six, five (twice) and four – as well as ranking second at Frankston for total marks (averaging four per game) across 18 matches.

 

TOM ATKINS (Geelong): 22-year-old club captain and 180cm inside midfielder in his fifth season with the Cats. Ranked first in the VFL for total tackles (averaging 10 per game) and third for contested possessions (13) as well as recording team-highs in total disposals (22) and inside-50s (three) across 18 matches.

 

TOM WILSON (Northern Blues): 26-year-old club captain and 176cm inside midfielder in his eighth season with the Blues. Ranked second in the VFL for total clearances (averaging 7.5 per game) and inside-50s (5.5) as well as recording team-highs in total disposals (26) and contested possessions (12) across 17 matches.

 

NICK RIPPON (North Melbourne): 24-year-old 178cm inside midfielder in his first season with the Kangaroos after crossing from North Ballarat. Won the J.J. Liston Trophy in 2015. Ranked second at North Melbourne for total disposals (averaging 23 per game) and third for contested possessions (11) and tackles (5.5) across 17 matches.

 

ELI TEMPLETON (Port Melbourne): 23-year-old 183cm outside midfielder in his second season with the Borough out of the AFL. Ranked first in the VFL for total uncontested possessions (averaging 17 per game) and recorded team-highs in total disposals (26) and inside-50s (five) as well as kicking 12 goals across 18 matches.

 

ANTHONY MILES (Richmond): 26-year-old 180cm AFL-listed Tigers inside midfielder. Recorded team-highs in total disposals (averaging 30 per game), contested possessions (14), clearances (7.5) and inside-50s (5.5) as well as kicking 14 goals across 14 matches.

 

BREDE SECCULL (Sandringham): 24-year-old 188cm inside midfielder in his first season with the Zebras after crossing from the SANFL. Recorded team-highs in total disposals (averaging 28 per game), contested possessions (13), clearances (six), inside-50s (four) and score assists (one) across 16 matches.

 

SAM COLLINS (Werribee): 24-year-old 194cm key defender in his first season with the Tigers out of the AFL. Ranked first in the VFL for total marks (averaging 11 per game) and contested marks (3.5) as well as ranking second at Werribee in total contested possessions (11) and rebound-50s (four) and third in disposals (21) across 18 matches.

 

MICHAEL GIBBONS (Williamstown): 23-year-old 175cm inside midfielder in his fifth season with the Seagulls. Won the J.J. Liston Trophy in 2016. Ranked first in the VFL for total disposals (averaging 28 per game), clearances (seven) and inside-50s (6.5) as well as recording team-highs in contested possessions (12) and tackles (six) across 18 matches.
