Anthony Anastasio kicked three goals in Port Melbourne's Semi Final victory

STATS CENTRAL: September success, pt 2

Stats Central this week looks at the key stats that helped teams to victory in the Peter Jackson VFL Semi Finals.

1st SEMI FINAL

RICHMOND d CASEY DEMONS

Richmond’s AFL team has quickly made a name for itself as a high-pressure outfit in 2017 and the same aggression has clearly filtered down to senior coach Craig McRae’s VFL group.

The Tigers were ranked 12th for tackles per game during the VFL home-and-away season but have lifted their intensity markedly in September. In the elimination final against Collingwood, they laid seven more tackles despite also winning 25 more disposals, while in a 27-point win against Casey last week they laid 101 tackles – 25 more than the Demons.

Anthony Miles (10 tackles), Jacob Ballard (nine), Reece Conca (seven) and Ivan Soldo (seven) led the way for Richmond, with that pressure helping restrict Casey’s ability to score from a big total of 59 inside-50s. In addition, the turnovers generated from their efforts created prime scoring chances for opportunistic small forwards such as Tyson Stengle (four goals), Sam Lloyd (three) and Shai Bolton (two), reflected in the Tigers booting 19 majors from 50 inside-50s (38 per cent efficiency). In contrast, the Demons kicked 15 goals from their forward-line entries at an efficiency of 25 per cent.

2nd SEMI FINAL

PORT MELBOURNE d FOOTSCRAY

Port Melbourne’s ability to blunt Footscray’s forward thrusts and repel them with interest was crucial in its 20-point victory.

The Bulldogs recorded a huge 68 inside-50s but could only manage 12 goals (18 per cent efficiency) as the Borough’s defenders won the ball in the air and then put their new run-and-carry game style for 2017 into action. Port Melbourne has turned from one of the VFL’s premier contested-ball-winning teams in 2016 into the second-ranked outfit for uncontested possessions and third-ranked for handballs, and won each of those counts convincingly against Footscray (+93 uncontested possessions and +93 handballs).

With key backmen Brody Mihocek (eight marks) and Lucas Cook (six) regularly winning contests against Bulldogs talls, they fed the likes of Dillon Viojo-Rainbow (25 disposals, nine rebound-50s), Damian Mascitti (25 and eight) and Luke Tynan (28 and four), who ran from defence and used their skills by foot and hand to set up teammates further up the ground. Dangerous goalkickers such as Jordan Lisle (four goals) and Anthony Anastasio (three) reaped the rewards of this work in front of goal, with the Borough booting 16 majors from 53 inside-50s (30 per cent efficiency).
