STATS CENTRAL: VFL Round 10

Geelong dominated possession in booting the first 19 goals of the game against North Melbourne on the weekend, as Stats Central looks at the key stats and players that influenced the results of games in Peter Jackson VFL Round 10.

GEELONG 21.11 (137) d NORTH MELBOURNE 5.7 (37)

Geelong’s dominance over the first three quarters was absolute, with the Cats leading by 120 points when North Melbourne kicked its first goal 26 minutes into the third term. Geelong racked up a huge 364 disposals to just 220 from the Kangaroos up to the final change, Jackson Thurlow recording a clear game-high 43 touches for the victors.

CASEY DEMONS 11.10 (76) d COLLINGWOOD 8.5 (53)

The Demons ran both ways against Collingwood, working hard offensively to record 18 more disposals and 14 more contested possessions than the Magpies but also defensively in laying 101 tackles to 85. Casey’s James Munro applied an equal-round-high 15 tackles, ahead of eight for teammate Dom Tyson – who also had a game-high 36 disposals.

PORT MELBOURNE 20.20 (140) d WERRIBEE 9.8 (62)

The Borough’s work in space cut Werribee to shreds, the VFL’s third-ranked team for uncontested possessions and uncontested marks per game winning those counts by 83 and 48 respectively in this match. Eli Templeton racked up a game-high 20 uncontested possessions, ahead of teammates Shannen Lange and Luke Tynan (19 each).

ESSENDON 20.17 (137) d COBURG 6.7 (43)

Essendon’s superiority in contests allowed it to generate a huge 74 inside-50s to Coburg’s 35. The Bombers won the contested-possession count 165-140 and clearance count 50-30, with Travis Colyer and Kobe Mutch (14 contested possessions each) and Mutch and Heath Hocking (seven clearances each) leading the way in tight.

SANDRINGHAM 22.18 (150) d FRANKSTON 3.10 (28)

Jack Billings reflected Sandringham’s complete control of this contest, the St Kilda playmaker recording 54 disposals and three goals as the Zebras won 188 more disposals and booted 19 more majors than Frankston. His monster statistical game relegated teammate Brede Seccull’s 32-disposal, three-goal performance to second ‘billing’.

WILLIAMSTOWN 12.11 (83) d RICHMOND 10.11 (71)

Williamstown’s engine room stepped up against the ladder-leaders, beating the Tigers in contested possessions 171-145 and clearances 49-39. The hardened trio of Michael Gibbons (game-highs of 16 contested possessions and 10 clearances), Brett Bewley (16 and six) and Willie Wheeler (15 and eight) starred in the contests.
