Rosie Dillon gets a kick away for Hawthorn against Collingwood

STATS CENTRAL: VFLW Finals Week 1

Some of the keys to week one of the Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s ‘Love the Game’ Finals Series were Hawthorn’s ability to find the ball in space and a second-half lift in intensity by the Geelong Cats, as Stats Central looks at the stats and players that influenced the results of the weekend’s games.

SEMI FINAL: HAWTHORN 5.2 (32) d COLLINGWOOD 3.3 (21)

Hawthorn proved just that bit better in a range of stats in this hard-fought win, topping the counts for contested possessions (132-125), hitouts (48-40) and clearances (37-33) but perhaps more importantly outpointing the Magpies in uncontested possessions (109-83) and marks (45-39). The Hawks found more space in which to use the ball effectively, allowing them to kick five goals from 24 inside-50s – more efficient than Collingwood’s three majors from 27 entries. Rosie Dillon (game-high 10 uncontested possessions) and Tamara Luke (nine and a game-high seven marks) were Hawthorn’s prime-movers, while Emma Mackie converted their work on the scoreboard with three goals from 18 disposals.

ELIMINATION FINAL: GEELONG CATS 7.9 (51) d NT THUNDER 6.6 (42)

Trailing by 15 points at half time, the Cats desperately needed a lift in intensity to overcome NT in the second half – and they got it. Geelong gained control at stoppages to eventually win the clearance count 41-25, which saw it generate 38 inside-50s to the Thunder’s 23 and 16 scoring shots to 12 as a result. The Cats also out-tackled NT 76-67, with TAC Cup Girls graduates Olivia Purcell (19 disposals, nine tackles and eight clearances) and Nina Morrison (18, seven and four) as well as experienced tough nuts Richelle Cranston (19, a game-high nine inside-50s and two goals) and Madeline Keryk (16 and nine tackles) leading the way for the victors in contests.
