Port Melbourne, Werribee, Richmond and the Casey Demons are the winners so far in Peter Jackson VFL Round 9 action.

The Borough dominated the second half to defeat Coburg by 64 points and Werribee got the best of a see-sawing clash with the Northern Blues, prevailing by 14 points in Channel 7’s match of the day. Later on Saturday, Richmond comfortably accounted for Geelong by 49 points while Casey gained a small measure of revenge on Footscray in the VFL Grand Final rematch, winning by 13 points.

PORT MELBOURNE 18.10 (118) d COBURG 8.6 (54)

It took Port Melbourne until time-on of the first quarter to put a major on the board, but the Borough’s slow start was certainly forgotten by the final siren at Piranha Park. Leading the Lions by only eight points at half time, Port piled on 13 goals to four after the long break – eight in a dominant last term – to record a percentage-boosting victory.

WERRIBEE 18.9 (117) d NORTHERN BLUES 15.13 (103)

Werribee notched a sixth straight victory and ended Northern’s own six-game winning streak in an entertaining battle at Ikon Park. The Blues slammed on seven goals in the first quarter and led by 28 points early in the second, but the Tigers wrested momentum back to take the lead by half time and then kicked the last five majors of the third term to secure a defining break.

RICHMOND 18.18 (126) d GEELONG 12.5 (77)

Richmond started quickly and kept Geelong at arm’s length throughout a crucial match for both teams at Punt Road Oval. The Tigers and Cats went into the game sitting outside the top eight on three wins apiece, but Richmond came out firing with a six-goal-to-three first quarter and had established a defining 32-point advantage by half time.

CASEY DEMONS 10.15 (75) d FOOTSCRAY 9.8 (62)

The Demons could only shrug off a persistent Footscray late in the VFL Grand Final rematch under lights at Casey Fields. No more than 13 points ever separated the two teams as Casey’s inaccuracy in front of goal kept the Bulldogs in the hunt. However, last year’s runner-up found its radar to boot the game’s final two majors and notch a fourth straight win.
