Former Geelong Cats VFLW midfielder Olivia Purcell was nominated for the 2019 NAB AFL Women’s Rising Star award following a stellar performance for the AFLW Cats in Round 5.
In what was her fifth AFLW match, the 161cm 19-year-old racked up 20 disposals, laid 10 tackles and kicked a goal in Geelong’s 27-point victory over Brisbane at Moreton Bay in Queensland on Saturday.

Purcell was selected by the Cats with pick no.14 at last year’s AFLW Draft after starring late in the Geelong VFLW team’s run to the 2018 Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s Grand Final. The tough on-baller played five VFLW games – including all three of the club’s finals – and recorded 19 disposals and 11 tackles to be among the Cats’ best players in their Grand Final loss to Hawthorn.
Purcell also starred in the Geelong Falcons’ undefeated run to last year’s Victorian U18 Girls premiership, claiming the club’s best-and-fairest award – ahead of Geelong VFLW teammate and subsequent no.1 AFLW Draft pick Nina Morrison – and earning a second straight U18 Girls Team of the Year guernsey.
The St Mary’s (Geelong FL) product also represented Vic Country in four games at the 2018 AFLW U18 Championships, after which she was named in the AFLW U18 All Australian team.
Purcell joins fellow 2018 draftees from the VFLW in Nina Morrison (Geelong VFLW to Geelong AFLW), Madison Prespakis (Melbourne Uni to Carlton AFLW), Courteney Munn (Southern Saints to North Melbourne) and Danielle Ponter (Essendon VFLW to Adelaide) as AFLW Rising Star nominees for 2019.
