Darebin’s Katie Brennan has won the Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s Best and Fairest Award for 2017.

The 24-year-old key forward received 21 votes, polling in eight of her 10 games played for the season.

After an injury-interrupted AFL Women’s season for the Western Bulldogs, Brennan played just three of the first seven VFL Women’s games before stringing together seven straight matches to finish the home-and-away season.

She was awarded the maximum three votes in five of her last seven games to storm to a four-vote win over St Kilda’s Brianna Davey (17 votes) and Melbourne Uni midfield pair Emma Kearney (16) and Ellie Blackburn (13).

Blackburn was the early leader in voting after polling in the first four matches of the season, but was soon joined at the top of the leaderboard by Eastern Devils recruit Emma King, who impressed in the ruck in the first half of the season before injury struck. By Round 8 there was a new leader, with Davey polling in all four games she played between Rounds 4 and 8 to jump ahead on 11 votes.

With just four votes to her name at the end of Round 7, Brennan polled in six of her last seven appearances – only missing out in Round 11 – to move into the lead at the end of Round 12 by two votes, ahead of Davey and Kearney with two rounds to play.

Eight goals in Round 13 gave Brennan her sixth best-on-ground performance of the season and left two players in contention for the award in the final round, with Davey still just two votes behind. However, five goals against the VU Western Spurs clinched Brennan not only the joint-lead in the Choose Tap leading VFL Women’s goalkicking award, but also two votes to help her claim back-to-back VFL Women’s Best and Fairest Awards for Darebin, after Daisy Pearce won the inaugural award in 2016.

Brennan’s VFL Women’s season included:

  • Six best-on-ground performances, in games against the Eastern Devils (Round 2), VU Western Spurs (Round 8), Cranbourne (Round 9), Geelong (Round 10), St Kilda (Round 12) and Seaford (Round 13)
  • Bags of seven and eight goals in Rounds 12 and 13 respectively, earning her the full three votes in both games.
