Livingstone’s defence denies Dogs

Lisa Hardeman Medal winner Stacey Livingstone was the cornerstone of Collingwood’s control of the territory battle during its VFLW premiership triumph over the Western Bulldogs on Sunday.

The Magpies recorded 17 scoring shots to just five and regularly had the ball stationed inside 50 during their 37-point Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s ‘Love the Game’ Grand Final victory at Ikon Park.

That was based on the work of players like 31-year-old Livingstone, who set up behind the ball and helped build a wall the Bulldogs found difficult to break through.

The 176cm Collingwood AFLW defender was named best-on-ground for her 25 disposals, 10 marks (two contested), nine rebound-50s and four inside-50s, continually denying the Bulldogs with her intercept marking and rebounding drive.

“I definitely couldn’t have done it without everybody else on the field,” Livingstone said following the Grand Final.

“The only way I play my role is with everybody else, and we played bloody well.”

Livingstone’s outstanding 2019 VFLW season saw her hold down a key-defensive post for the minor premiers, averaging 10 disposals and three rebound-50s per game in 10 home-and-away matches to earn selection in the VFLW Team of the Year.

She also played important roles in two previous finals wins against the Southern Saints with her stopping ability.

Having played 16 AFLW games for the Magpies since being taken from the Port Melbourne Colts with pick no.70 in the 2016 NAB AFLW Draft, Livingstone is now elevating herself into the same air as elite-level teammates such as Jaimee Lambert, Brianna Davey and Chloe Molloy.

All three were also crucial against the Bulldogs, often benefiting closer to goal from Collingwood’s near-impenetrable defensive structure further down the field – with Livingstone at its core.

“It was (a plan to lock the ball into our attacking half), because we knew that they (Bulldogs defenders) flood our forward line,” Livingstone said.

“We had to be composed and just build that wall and not get sucked into their game.”
