Paxman flies in Falcons flag win

Karen Paxman added another chapter to an already decorated football story by winning the medal for best-on-ground in Darebin’s Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s Grand Final victory on Sunday.

The 28-year-old controlled play behind the ball throughout the seven-point defeat of Diamond Creek at Etihad Stadium, regularly intercepting opposition attacking forays and then driving the Falcons forward.

Paxman has now played in five premierships at the top level of Victorian women’s football, following flags at Darebin in 2013, 2014 (both VWFL) and 2016 (VFL Women’s) as well as one with the VU Western Spurs in 2011 when she was also named best-on-ground in the decider.

Her form over a long period saw her signed as a priority player by Melbourne for the inaugural AFL Women’s season earlier this year. Typically prolific across seven games, Paxman finished the home-and-away rounds second in the competition for total disposals behind Demons (and Falcons) teammate Daisy Pearce and was rewarded with All Australian selection.

The Lalor Park, Hadfield and Heidelberg product played a crucial role across 15 VFL Women’s matches in 2017, earning a second straight selection in the Team of the Year back line and helping Darebin recover from a Qualifying Final loss to gain revenge on the Creekers in the Grand Final.

She also represented Victoria in the AFL Women’s State of Origin match on the weekend before the VFL Women’s finals commenced, recording 31 disposals, six marks and one goal in a 97-point win against the Allies.
