Five of the VFL nominees are also among a group of 22 players who will go through a medical screening in front of AFL clubs on Wednesday May 22 in the lead-up to the draft. Each AFL club was able to nominate up to three players that they would like to see participate in the screening.
vfl.com.au takes a closer look at the five VFL players who will attend the medical screening below.
Lochlan Dickson (Coburg): 24-year-old Dickson was a joint-winner of Coburg’s best-and-fairest award last year following a stellar first VFL season. After joining the Lions from Norwood (Eastern FL), he averaged 21 disposals, five marks and four rebound-50s per game in 18 matches as a defender in 2018 but has excelled as a 190cm midfielder this season, averaging 23 disposals, five clearances, five inside-50s and one goal per game across five outings.
Sam Lowson (Coburg): Now in his third VFL season, 23-year-old Lowson has gone to another level as a crafty 182cm forward. The East Ringwood (Eastern FL) product booted 27 goals in 23 games for Coburg across 2017-18 but is currently leading the VFL goalkicking count with 14 majors from five matches in 2019. Lowson was elevated to the Lions’ leadership group this year and is also averaging 13 disposals and eight contested possessions per game.
Ray Connellan (Essendon VFL): Fresh off St Kilda’s AFL list, 24-year-old Connellan was earmarked to fill the role of former Essendon VFL and now Saints AFL speedster Nick Hind this year. The Irish category B rookie kicked 29 goals in 34 VFL matches for Sandringham across 2017-18 without making his AFL debut and is now playing as a 191cm line-breaker for the Bombers, averaging 16 disposals and seven inside-50s per game in two matches.
Frank Anderson (Northern Blues): 21-year-old Anderson has previously been on some AFL clubs’ radars and has impressed in his first VFL season this year. The 186cm South Croydon (Eastern FL) product has shown his toughness in contests and potential to be damaging forward of stoppages across four matches in 2019, averaging 16 disposals, eight contested possessions, five tackles and four clearances per game.
Mitch Hibberd (Williamstown): Following three seasons on North Melbourne’s AFL list for only four games at the elite level, 22-year-old Hibberd was delisted and then signed with the Seagulls. Originally from Tasmania, he played mostly as a 191cm defender in 37 VFL matches from 2016-18 but has moved further up the ground in 2019 to average 23 disposals, 11 contested possessions and five tackles per game in five outings.
