KEY RECRUITS

Sam Gilbert (33yo in 2019, from St Kilda AFL): “We wanted to get more mature bodies in with our recruitment this off-season and we’ve been able to do that with Sam. He’s played 208 AFL games as a defender, as a forward and through the midfield, and we’ll lean heavily on him throughout the year in terms of his experience and nous.”

Nathan Wright (25yo in 2019, from St Kilda AFL): “Nathan is another mature body and he and Sam Gilbert give us some real flexibility on the field. Nathan can play as a forward and he also played in defence and through the midfield during his (35-game) AFL career.”

Sam Fox (27yo in 2019, from Frankston Bombers): “Sam is another of our mature-age recruits and he has really good character traits. He’ll bring some experience and versatility to our group as well, being a midfielder who can play inside and outside and also as a small forward.”

POTENTIAL BIG IMPROVERS

Brede Seccull (26yo in 2019, 21 VFL games): “Brede’s 2018 season was outstanding on and off the field; in particular, in terms of his leadership. We probably knew what we were going to get with Brede, but I didn’t think he was going to have the immediate impact that he did. He still has a lot of improvement left in him around his midfield play and I think he can take his game to another level from last year.”

Kade Answerth (23yo in 2019, 57 VFL games): “We know Kade is a very flexible player and if we can make sure we play him in the right position – whether that’s forward or in the midfield – then I think we’ll see the best of him this year. He just needs to work on not having little fade-outs during games.”

Jack Noone (24yo in 2019, 54 VFL games): “Jack will play predominantly in the back line this year. He’s an experienced player now and he understands the way we want to play and teaches it really well to others. Having Sam Gilbert there to help coordinate our team defence is only going to benefit Jack and the likes of (fellow defender) Jackson Hille.”

ELIGIBLE 23rd PLAYERS TO WATCH

Kai Owens (20yo in 2019, from Sandringham Dragons): “I think Kai is going in the right direction. He’s extremely athletic and we unfortunately had to play him in the ruck a little bit last year (in six VFL games), but I think that’ll help improve his versatility over the journey. He’ll play as a forward this year.”

Sam Sofronidis (20yo in 2019, from Sandringham Dragons): “Sam is also very athletic. He could play at both ends of the ground for us if need be, but I’d envisage him playing as a forward and a bit in the ruck as well.”

TEAM STRENGTHS

“I felt we were found wanting against the mature bodies of the top sides in 2018, so hopefully we’ll have more of a mature edge about us in all phases of the game this year.

“While we were ranked really high in winning contested ball last year, it’s about being effective when we do win it and I felt we succumbed a bit under a lot of pressure. I think the additions of mature bodies like Sam Gilbert and Nathan Wright (see above) will be able to help in that regard, so we feel like we’ve been able to plug the hole left by the departures of (experienced players) Myke Cook and Dylan Weickhardt.”

HEADLINE YOU WANT TO SEE
