Michael Barlow (32yo in 2019, from Gold Coast AFL): “We’re very lucky to have Michael back at the club (after 40 VFL games in 2008-09 before being drafted by Fremantle). He’s led from the front in every aspect of training this pre-season. I’ve been mentoring him as an aspiring coach and he’s going to be our midfield coach as well as playing. He’s hard-working, well organised and presents very well to the players.”

Michael Barlow: back in the gold and black

Timm House (24yo in 2019, from Geelong AFL): “Timm has been a great acquisition. His leadership skills and ability to play at both ends of the field will be a great asset for us. Having lost Sam Collins as a defender and Josh Porter as a forward, we certainly needed to fill some key-position spots.”

Ryan Hebron (22yo in 2019, from Sydney University): “I’ve been very impressed by Ryan. He’s a drop-off marking half back who’s been doing OK in the NEAFL, but he wanted to step up in the VFL this year. I look forward to seeing his progression.”

Matt Hanson (24yo in 2019, 58 VFL games): “Matt has been an outstanding player over the last few years winning three of the club’s last four best-and-fairests (2015-17). I can see he has the attributes to be an AFL player and his desire and preparation for all games and training sessions sets him apart.”

Jack Henderson (20yo in 2019, 18 VFL games): “I really like Jack’s ability to play at both ends of the ground or on the ball.”

Captain: Michael Sodomaco (28yo in 2019, 83 VFL games)

Vice-captain: Matt Hanson (see above)

Leadership group members:

  • Timm House (see above)
  • Matthew Munro (24yo in 2019, 53 VFL games)

“The expertise of what happens in an AFL club is something I know about (having coached Port Adelaide in 274 AFL games, including the 2004 premiership victory). It might be on rehab, it might be on pre-hab, it might be on understanding the game – if I can pass on these things to our guys that aspire to be AFL players, they might just have a better chance of getting drafted. We also have (former Richmond and Sydney AFL player) Nick Daffy and (recently retired Melbourne and Hawthorn AFL player) Jack Fitzpatrick working as coaches to assist our players.

“From a general team perspective, I think we’ll be well organised, a good kicking team and competitive.”

Back line coach: Jeff Andrews (retained from 2018, when senior assistant coach)

Midfield line coach: Michael Barlow (see above)

Forward line coach: Nick Daffy (from Essendon VFL)

Ruck/midfield assistant coach: Jack Fitzpatrick (retained from 2018)

Development coach: James Canale (from Ajax)

“Either ‘Werribee wins the flag’ or ‘10,000 fans crowd into Avalon Airport Oval’ – I want the club to embrace the community and it’d be fantastic to see the community embracing us.”
